What to Upgrade First
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 runs on IW Engine 9.0, the same tech behind MW3 (2023) and Warzone. Infinity Ward’s engine is known for excellent PC optimization across a wide range of hardware. MW4 is the first Call of Duty to drop last-gen consoles entirely, so expect a meaningful jump in visual fidelity and baseline system requirements compared to MW3.
For competitive multiplayer, frame rate matters more than resolution. A steady 120+ FPS at 1080p gives you a real advantage in gunfights. If you already have a PC, prioritize your GPU first — the jump from a GTX 1660 to an RTX 5060 gets you from 60 FPS struggles to consistent 120+ FPS at 1080p High.
If your GPU is already an RTX 3060 or better, check your CPU next. CoD multiplayer with 100+ players in ground war modes and Warzone is surprisingly CPU-intensive. A 6-core CPU from 2020 or newer (Ryzen 5 5600, i5-10600K) handles it fine, but older quad-cores will bottleneck your frame rate in large lobbies.
RAM is straightforward: 16 GB is the floor. CoD games with Warzone integration have historically used 12-14 GB during gameplay. 32 GB provides headroom for streaming or Discord alongside the game but isn’t required.
Storage is non-negotiable — expect a 150 GB+ install size with campaign, multiplayer, and the inevitable Warzone integration. An NVMe SSD prevents texture streaming stutters that are especially noticeable in fast-paced multiplayer.
